Golf driver angle of attack

Take the left thumb off and all of a sudden you start taking crisp dollar bill divots. The average AoA for a tour pro is around 4 degrees down. That's a very shallow angle of attack and about 1/3 as steep as the typical amateur we've measured using our launch monitor. Angle of attack is the amount a golf club is ascending or descending into the golf ball at impact. With irons, the angle should be negative (descending), with driver positive (ascending). An inefficient angle of attack can cause poor golf shots by affecting such things as launch angle, spin rate and energy transfer. The attack angle is a measurement of how steep or shallow your clubhead is moving through impact, and it has a direct effect on how much distance you are able to generate with the driver. Often we find most amateurs will swing too steeply into the ball, between a -4 and -6 descending blow. Great drivers of the ball will present a shallower angle of attack, maximising the Estimated Reading Time: 2 mins.

In summary, I have found that the acceptable range of attack angle for most players should be between degrees down and 4-degrees up. With that being said, it should always be applied on a case-by-case basis. Attack angle is a balance between age, swing speed, competition, and the tees a golfer plays. Launch angle is determined by the club’s loft angle and the angle of attack at impact. So, with a driver loft of degrees and an angle of attack of +5 degrees, the launch angle would be degrees. You can use ClubHub’s angle of attack parameter to achieve your optimum launch angle and greatest distance.
